Bonnaroo 6/14/08

By now you certainly must have heard about this epic 3-hour, festival stealing performance at Bonnaroo in front of 60,000 plus fans. While many of the die-hard fan base avoided the festival scene with visions of a ‘greatest hits’ set, leave it to Pearl Jam to pull out one head spinning set list and earth grinding performance for the masses. Pacing themselves into the clear Tennessee night with the surprising opener “Hard To Imagine,” it was already apparent that this was going to be a special night. Dusting off the Lost Dog track “All Night” for the first time ever after a rousing “Corduroy,” the Bonnaroovians were just in their initial stage of getting their world rocked PJ style. The tour bust-outs of “1/2 Full” and “Animal” and this show’s version of “Even Flow” are gleaming examples of the synergistic glue that flows between guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready and the vigorous rhythm section that is bassist Jeff Ament and drummer extraordinaire Matt Cameron. The main set closing tri-fecta of “Love Reign O’er Me,” “Do The Evolution” and “Rearviewmirror” are nothing short of a heart-pounding, fist-pumping rock and roll ass kicking. Digging back into their Catalog to the Vs. album for a re-worked bust out of “W.M.A.” to start the encore set had those in-the-know in a blissful state of disbelief, which only continued with the appearance of an extremely emotional “Release” in the second encore dedicated to Luke Russert. A smokin’ hot “Alive” brought the arena rock anthem to festival proportions, and then a final third encore of Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” just iced this unfreakinbelievable cake called Bonnaroo. Needless to say, you need this bootleg. Kanye’s already ordered his!
