After two well-received albums and one critically acclaimed EP, the band Irving now tips a hat to its varied influences with the first installment of its Seasons EP series: THE SEASONS - [fall] vol. 1_covers available on Spaceland Recordings.\r\n\r\nBy pulling the focus away from Irving’s oft-hailed songwriting, the Covers EP highlights instead the band’s inventive production and refined curatorial approach to the recording process. The EP can also be seen as nod to the many fans, critics and DJs who, through the years, have hazarded guesses (some on-target, some not) as to the band’s vast and varied list of influences.\r\n\r\nThose familiar with Irving’s earlier releases might expect to find the likes of Syd Barrett and Harry Nilsson on the band’s short list. But the Covers EP also surprises, featuring a lush rendition of “Back to Gray,” written by past tour-mates the Thermals (a live version is also featured on the band’s [in Spaceland] release), and a pastoral vision of Bruce Springsteen's lusty “I'm on Fire.” The Covers EP is rounded out by an indie-fi “Be My Baby,” originally made famous by the Ronettes.
